Why is black from AI artwork not perfectly black in print?

Generators produce RGB images whose black, once converted for print, is composed of all four inks. It looks fine in photos, but large solid areas will not be as deep as 100% K black from a vector design. For designs with large black backgrounds, consider ordering a graphic design.

Why a file from an AI chat is not yet a print file

Image generators (ChatGPT, Gemini, Midjourney) produce RGB raster images — usually PNG or JPG sized for screens, not for print. Such a file can be printed well if you take care of three things: the right pixel dimensions (with bleed), sufficient resolution, and realistic expectations about colors after conversion to the print color space (CMYK).

Generate the image at the right size

The most important rule: generate at the target proportions and size from the start. Add 3 mm of bleed on each side of the product size and convert to pixels at 300 DPI:

What an AI generator cannot do

Deep black — black from a generator is composed of all inks. Large black areas will not print as deep as 100% K black from a vector design.
Small text — lettering below ~8 pt generated inside the image will be blurry. Add text separately or order a graphic design.
Gradients — smooth transitions may show banding.
Dieline — the image has no cut line; contour-cut products require a design with a cutting path.
