How to prepare files for spiral binding

In short

- two PDF files: inner pages and cover
- CMYK, 300 dpi
- 2 mm bleed on every side
- at the binding edge keep content at least 10 mm from the edge (holes for the spiral)
- at the other edges at least 3 mm
- fonts outlined, no ICC profiles

Two files: inner pages and cover

Below the calculator you can download two PDF templates. Inner pages is one file with all pages in order: sheet 1 front, sheet 1 back, sheet 2 front and so on. With 10 sheets the file has 20 pages. Cover is a 4-page file: front, inside front, inside back, back.

Margin at the binding edge

Along the edge you choose in the calculator (top or side) we punch the holes for the spiral. Keep text, logos and important elements at least 10 mm from that edge. Backgrounds and photos can run into the bleed – the holes simply go through them.

2 mm bleed

Enlarge the design by 2 mm on each side. An A4 sheet (210 × 297 mm) is a 214 × 301 mm file, A5 (148 × 210 mm) is 152 × 214 mm.

Spiral at the top – mind the back of the sheet

With the spiral at the top, sheets flip like a calendar. If the back should read correctly without turning the whole copy, rotate it 180° in the file. With the spiral on the side nothing is rotated – pages run like in a book.
