Saddle-stitched brochure and catalogue printing

Use this calculator to price and order saddle-stitched brochures, catalogues, price lists, instruction manuals, event programmes, multi-page menus and lookbooks, bound with two staples through the spine. We print digitally from 1 copy, in any size from A6 to A4.

  • Paper for inner pages and cover: gloss or matt coated 130–300 g, offset, satin, fine papers and eco cotton paper.
  • Lamination: gloss, matt, scratch-resistant matt or soft touch (coated paper from 200 g).
  • Flat staples or loop staples for filing in a ring binder.
  • Several designs in one order, for example language versions of a catalogue in different quantities.
  • Production from 1 working day, express for orders placed by 11:00.

Perfect-bound catalogue

Thicker catalogues and price lists with a glued spine can be ordered in the perfect-bound softcover calculator. Inner pages are then printed on uncoated offset or satin paper, which works well for technical catalogues, price lists and manuals.

How much does brochure printing cost?

The price depends on size, page count, paper, lamination and quantity. The larger the run, the lower the price per copy. The calculator shows the exact price for your configuration instantly.

How to order

1. Finished size

Enter width and height in millimetres, from A6 to A4 portrait. You choose the binding edge at the end. Landscape A4 is quoted on request.

2. Inner pages

Choose the paper and the number of inner pages: at least 4, always a multiple of 4. The calculator works out the maximum page count from the paper thickness.

3. Cover

The cover is configured separately, even if it uses the same paper as the inner pages. It can be printed on the outside only or on both sides, with or without lamination.

4. Staples and binding edge

Flat staples are standard. Loop staples let you file the brochure in a ring binder. You also choose whether we bind the short or the long edge.

5. Quantity and designs

We accept orders from 1 copy. Several designs with the same parameters can be combined in one order.

6. Price and templates

The price appears on the right. The star next to it saves the quote in your customer account. Together with the quote we generate cover and inner page templates with bleed, trim line and safety margin.

Production time

Usually from 1 working day after we receive correct files, 2 working days for larger runs. Express is available in the basket for orders placed by 11:00.

How to prepare brochures

In short

Dimensions

Trim size

Pages for printing should be prepared at their folded size; please do not prepare spreads. The size after trimming equals the format entered in the calculator (width, height). You add the 3 mm bleed on each side in the design.

Pages in order starting from the cover, i.e. cover1, cover2, inner1, inner2, ... cover3, cover4.

If the job contains blank pages, they must also be placed in the file in the appropriate position

Document size

The design must be enlarged by the bleed, i.e. by 3 mm on each side relative to the trim size. E.g. 154 x 216 mm. If any objects extend beyond the design area, they must be cropped.

Note!
Even if your design does not have a background extended into the bleed, the document size must be maintained. Therefore, the document size should be defined by a rectangle with the design dimensions on the lowest layer, with no outline and no fill, or (in the case of a raster file) the design should be cropped so that it has the correct dimensions.

Bleed

The background and all objects adjacent to the edge of the piece must be extended into the bleed beyond the trim edge. For this job the bleed is always 3 mm on each side.

 

Graphics

Colour model

The job must be prepared in the CMYK model. If the design contains raster images (textures, photographs), they must also be converted to CMYK.

To obtain a full, deep black, use 100% black without any CMY components (i.e. C:0 M:0 Y:0 K:100) and save it as vector graphics. When using so-called rich black (e.g. C:50 M:50 Y:50 K:100), a colour cast in one of the CMY components may occur, and with very small fonts (or reversed-out text) or objects the edges may appear blurred.

Do not use gradients down to values lower than 5%.
 Add noise to gradients to avoid banding.

Optimal resolution

The optimal resolution for raster graphics and photos is 300dpi. 

Placement of objects

Important objects (photos, graphics, texts) must not be placed closer than 3 mm to the edge of the trim size and to fold lines (creases, folds). 

 When rotating the design by -90 degrees, check whether bitmaps rotate correctly.

 Place all texts on a separate (top) layer.

When saving as CDR, group the design and convert fonts to curves.
In the file, define a page size matching the above-mentioned document size and place the design centrally on the page.
When saving a design without a (white) background as EPS, it must be bounded by a frame with dimensions matching
the above-mentioned document size.

Due to cutting tolerance, the design may shift slightly relative to the trim edge. Therefore we advise against placing any kind of frames around the design, as their off-centre position on the piece may be visible. In such a case we recommend a margin of min. 5mm from the cut line.

Saving the file

File formats

Preferred: PDF (PDF 1.3, Acrobat 4.0)
Accepted: TIFF, JPG (not recommended)

Notes

If the design contains text, remember to convert it to curves or embed the fonts in the file (for PDF files) before saving.
Do not rasterize texts!!!

If possible, save all pages in one file. If the format you have chosen does not allow this, save the files named cover1, cover2, inner1, inner2, ... cover3, cover4.

When saving as TIFF, save the file as a single layer, without additional alpha channels.

If you are sending more than one file, pack the files into a ZIP or RAR archive.

For complex designs containing many layers, overlapping graphics, shadows, transparencies etc., flatten them as far as possible into a single background image, keeping texts, logos, lines and other important design elements in vector form.

 

Additional information

Please note that colours may differ from prints made on inkjet printers and from the image displayed on a monitor, due to differences in printing technology and colour presentation.
